Regular-season game: Malfs kill Beasts' hopes to win Australia (20 August 2013)

Season II, week 6: igorz malfunxionistz 29, Dicey Beasts 26 (Final/OT)

For the second time in as many seasons, igorz malfunxionistz (3-3) finished their season with an overtime win against a playoff team. Their kicker split the uprights from 27 yds out to finish the 8-play, 74-yd opening drive of the overtime to suddenly kill the Dicey Beasts' (4-2) hope to win the Australian Division.

The Beasts' hopes to win the division on home soil got lifted when their kicker scored from 29 yds out with only 5:12 minutes left to play. But the Malfs responded with a quick scoring drive capped with a 29-yarder to send the game into overtime.

The Malfs took the lead only 48 seconds into the game with two quick passes including a 40-yd TD pass. But the Beasts needed only 4:36 to turn the game around. They opened their account when a Malfs' defender recovered a fumble at their own 2-yd line but then dubiously decided to run a return through their own end zone and never found a way out.

After the safety kick, the Beasts' QB completed 3-of-4 for 67 yds including a 10-yd TD pass to give his team a 9-7 lead.

In the middle of the second quarter, the Malfs reclaimed the lead capitalizing from an interception and a short field when their QB found a receiver for a 10-yd TD pass. The Malfs tried to go for two with a fake-extra point but failed.

The Malfs' QB finished the game with 21-of-31 for 238 yds and 3 TDs. He threw one interception and had a rating of 109.3, his third 100+ rating of the season.

In the third quarter, the lead changed for a third, fourth and fifth time. At first, the Beasts scored on a 16-yd TD run and following an interception, they had a chance to extend their lead but a bold 60-yd FG attempt fell short.

Four plays later, the Malfs' QB threw his third TD pass but the Beasts finished their ensuing 79-yd scoring drive with their QB's only TD pass to give the hosts a 23-20 lead. With their next possession, the Malfs covered only 26 yds with nine plays but their kicker tied the game with a terrific 52-yd FG. Earlier, he had had misses from 46 and 52 yds out.

The Beasts' defenders finished the game with three sacks and twelve tackles-for-loss. With a total of 23 sacks, they exceeded their tally of last season by one sack and finished the season as sack leaders for the second time in as many seasons.

The Malfs had been eliminated from playoff contention prior to their regular-season finale but they will represent their division at the QFL all-star game. The Beasts clinched their playoff spot during the game when the news arrived that MoRe's Moles had lost to silentsound's Silentknights.
